Your Council tax bill shows which Council tax band your home is in. In some cases, you are able to appeal against the band your property is in. See Council tax appeals for details.

The Council tax for the year is set by working out what the charge for a Council tax band D property is (Band D being the middle band) and then setting the charge for the other Council tax bands as a percentage of the Council tax band D charge. For example, the charge for a Council tax band H property will be twice the amount of a Council tax Band D charge.

Most households have to pay Council tax. All types of property that people live in are subject to Council tax - even houseboats. There is one bill per household. If a house has been split into separate self-contained flats, each flat gets its own bill. However, bedsits, hostels and other properties with shared facilities normally get one bill and the owner is liable to pay it.

Each property has been put into one of 8 valuation bands, according to what it was worth on 1st April 1991. This valuation was done by the Valuation Office Agency, which is part of the Inland Revenue, not the Council. The amount of Council tax you pay is based on the band your home is in.

What band is my home in?

The Valuation Office Agency have compiled a database listing the bandings of all domestic properties in England and Wales. Council Tax Valuation List
