Members' Interests/Gifts and Hospitality Register

Interests

Councillors are required by law to declare certain interests when they become a councillor. These interests include the name of their employer and their occupation, details of any land or house they occupy within the city, interests in companies and securities in which the have a substantial interest which operate in the city and other financial interests.

Details of individual councillors interests are set out in the Members' Register.

In addition, the formal Register of Interests for all councillors is open for inspection for by the public at the Council House, College Green, Bristol during normal office hours.

A register of interests by scrutiny commission co-optees is also available for public inspection at the same address.

In addition to the above, councillors must also declare at meetings of the Council, and at Cabinet meetings or committees where they are a member, if they have an interest in any of the matters being discussed. The same rules apply in relation to scrutiny co-optees.

A separate register is maintained of such declarations and is also available for public inspection.

Gifts and hospitality

Under Bristol's Code of Conduct for councillors and co-optees, declarations of any gift or hospitality which is offered over the value of £25 must be declared.

Again, this register is available for public inspection.

Updating forms

Councillors and scrutiny co-optees are responsible for ensuring that their entry on the Register of Interests remains up to date and as accurate as possible. It is also important that any gifts or hospitality over £25 which are offered (whether or not they are accepted) are logged at the earliest opportunity.
