Allotment strategy

Investment in allotment sites

The first phase of the Allotment Strategy which covered 1999-2004 was developed as a way to improve the management of the Allotments Service and its key aim was to maximise participation in allotment gardening. It is widely accepted that the strategy has been a success in many ways, and it has been a working document at the heart of everything the Allotments Service does.

The Strategy recognises the importance of allotments as a leisure and recreational facility and for their benefits to communities, green spaces, health and well-being and wildlife, as well as in producing low cost locally produced food in a sustainable way. The updated Allotment Strategy for 2009-2019 ensures that we continue to develop and improve the Allotments Service, and continue to maximise participation in allotment gardening over the next ten years.

The Allotment Strategy 2009-2019 has now been adopted by by the city council's cabinet and can be downloaded from the bottom of the page. Appendices are available on request.
