Working with communities

Get involved

Bristol Parks has been committed for over a decade to supporting local people who would like to get more involved in their local parks and green spaces, and was one of the first local authority park managers in the country to employ a hands-on community development worker for park and green space development.

Bristol Parks recognises that by working with communities we are likely to achieve a greater understanding of what local people want from their local park and green space, that projects in parks will be more successful and sustainable, and that there will be more opportunities to make a real difference to our urban environment.

To encourage communities wanting to improve their local parks and green spaces we have produced a Community Action Toolkit. This toolkit is particularly aimed at those who want to work with other local people to impove green spaces by forming a 'community park group'. It includes useful information and advice to help you establish a park group and to help you with the way the council works - especially the Bristol Parks service. The toolkit refers to a series of guidance sheets to save you time and effort in carrying out the tasks that are most common for any park / action group. You  can view and download the toolkit here.

Bristol Parks engages regularly with community park groups across the city about the management and improvement of local parks and green spaces and has established the Bristol Parks forum to provide groups with opportunities for shared learning, and an opportunity to influence park and green space strategy and development at a citywide level.
