Horfield Common
General information
Kellaway Avenue, Horfield, Bristol BS7
Introduction
Horfield Common is a broad, historic open space in the quiet northern suburbs of Bristol, much enjoyed by local residents for its fresh air and fine views over the northern suburbs of the city. The Ardagh is an equally popular sport and recreation facility situated on the common.
It has been suggested that the name Horfield came from Hore, or Horu, possibly the name of a chief killed in a fight between the Saxons and the Romano-British, and buried in one of the two tumuli which were originally close to the common; ‘Hore’ may also be descriptive of the clayey, dirty, or muddy subsoil.
This green space is ancient common land with a long history of grazing use by the commoners. View the history section for more information.
Access
Horfield is a quiet suburb about three miles north of the centre of Bristol. The common lies on either side of the top part of Kellaway Avenue and stretches up to where Gloucester Road becomes Filton Road.
The common is accessible and is open all the time and is criss-crossed by many paths. Disabled access is generally good but the common has some gently sloping areas.
As this is ancient common land, parking is prohibited on all parts of the common.
