Victoria Park

General information

Victoria Park Bristol

Hill Avenue, Bedminster, Bristol BS3

Introduction

A large, popular, rolling Victorian park with lots of facilities, fine views and wide open grassy areas giving the impression of plenty of space.

Access

Entrance to the park is from it’s neighbouring streets - St Luke’s Road, Hill Avenue, Nutgrove Avenue, Somerset Terrace and Fraser Street in Bedminster. The park is very hilly with an undulating landscape with many widing paths and steps, and may be very challenging for people with disabilities and wheelchair users.

Art

A ceramic artwork, with a ballooning theme, has been created by VPAG on the railway wall.

Buildings

The old park lodge by the park entrances from Nutgrove Avenue and Somerset Road is currently unused. VPAG and the city council are keen to raise funds to renovate the building for park management and community use.

Community, clubs and associations

The Victoria Park Action Group (VPAG) is a committed and active local user group with many interests. It was started in 2002 by people living near the park who wanted to preserve and improve its facilities. The group can be contacted via it’s website or by email. Click here to find out more about getting involved in supporting your local park or green space.

Developments

Victoria Park Action Group (VPAG) in partnership with Bristol Parks have instigated successful improvements to Victoria Park and wish to develop an agreed approach to managing and developing the park in the future. This will be achieved through the development of the ‘Victoria Park Improvement Plan’  - details of which can be viewed via the menu at the top of these pages.

Park user information

There is a Park Watch Scheme run by local volunteers offering a point of contact in the park for reporting damage or defects.

The Park Keeper, Fliss Jenkins, is on duty during normal working hours Monday to Thursday and other staff are on duty on Friday each week. They are well known to local park users as a point of contact and for sharing information.

Plants and wildlife

There is a wildlife area in the park, incorporating a hedgerow with native plants (including hawthorn, willow, dog rose and hazel) surrounding a wetland. The hedge shelters the site from the winds, making it more attractive to both people and insects, which would otherwise be blown about in the wind.

Look out for butterflies laying their eggs on the planted nettles, and the small, bristly Red Admiral and small Tortoiseshell caterpillars after they have hatched. In winter, finches can be seen eating the seed heads of the thistles and willowherb: an invaluable source of protein in cold weather.

Of course, wildlife is not confimed to this area: watch out for the birds using the park's mature trees and buildings for shelter and nesting, and for the many insects taking advantage of the park's wealth of plants for nectar. You may even be lucky enough to spot bats flitting about in the evening, taking advantage of the rich insect life in the trees. Click here to find out more about wildlife in Bristol.
