Lawrence Weston Moor Local Nature Reserve
The reserve is managed in partnership with Avon Wildlife Trust.
History
Lawrence Weston Moor is one of the few remaining fragments of the marshes which used to stretch all the way from Blaise Castle to Avonmouth.
Getting there
From Long Cross, Lawrence Weston, turn down Lawrence Weston Road at the side of St Bede's Secondary School. This road ends at a free car park in front of the allotments. Turn left out of the car park onto a lane which takes you around the back of the allotments and into the nature reserve. Plan your visit to Lawrence Weston Moor with regional map, journey planner and city map.
Accessibility
The nature reserve is a wetland habitat and therefore wellies are recommended except in very dry weather. The site is flat with no slopes or steps, although some of the meadows can becomed quite overgown in summer.
Wildlife
Habitats on the reserve include:
- Ditches, known as 'rhynes' which provide a fantastic home for wildlife, including dragonflies, frogs, newts and the elusive water vole.
- Three ponds on the reserve, the largest of which has a pond-dipping platform designed for the use of the local primary school.
- Wildflower grasslands which support a range of wet-loving plants such as ragged robin and water mint.
- Reedbeds, which are very unusual in Bristol.
