Core Strategy Preferred Options Review Paper

Preferred Options Review

The Core Strategy Preferred Options Review paper was the fourth document published in developing the council's Core Strategy for Bristol. This paper explored how the Spatial Strategy for the city could evolve in response to the Secretary of State’s Proposed Changes to the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) published in July 2008.

The paper contained six options to accommodate the additional new homes required within Bristol to meet the proposed increase to 36,500 dwellings set out in the Proposed Changes to the RSS.  It showed how these options had been considered and set out a suggested approach to accommodating this higher level of development. The suggested approach would comprise:

  • 4,500 new homes derived from more efficient use of urban land
  • 500 additional homes located within an expanded City Centre
  • 1,000 -1,700 additional homes on some land currently retained for industrial and warehousing uses
  • Up to 1,500 additional homes located on the south east edge of the city

The paper also provided further detail on the content of emerging Spatial Policies, explaining how the policies had evolved to reflect community involvement (see related links below). It did not expand upon the emerging Development Principles set out in the Preferred Options Paper published in January 2008, as these were to be addressed by means of a separate development principles consultation to follow.

Alongside the Preferred Options Review paper, a Sustainability Appraisal Update Note was published, assessing the likely significant social, economic and environmental effects of the six proposed options.

Consultation on the Preferred Options Review Paper ran for eight weeks between 27th February 2009 to 24th April 2009. Responses received will be considered by the council, and the views expressed will inform the Core Strategy Publication Document. Responses to the Preferred Options Review consultation are now available to download. A Preferred Options Review Consultation Report is also available to download
