Quick Links

Background

The Bristol Local Plan written statement, adopted in 1997, sets the land use and development strategy for the future of the city and forms an important part of the council's policy framework. It provides the means to deliver the land use aspirations of the Community Strategy. The Plan is a statutory document required under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. It is one of the key policy documents that lead and direct planning and investment in the city and a fundamental means to deliver sustainable development. The Proposals Map accompanying the Bristol Local Plan, is available to view via the Planning Portal. This is an interactive process where you can access a list of relevant policies and designations for an individual site.

The Bristol Local Plan advises prospective developers where they should seek to build new homes, shops and offices, and of important areas of open space and the city's historic environment. When planning applications are submitted, the Plan helps decide whether these applications should be approved.

  • It takes account of land use consequences of other policies and programmes, including education, housing, health, waste management and environmental protection such as flooding.
  • The Plan sets out how many houses Bristol needs and indicates where they could be built. government and local policy aims to steer development to brownfield/previously used sites and to protect open space wherever possible. The Plan also identifies sites for new community facilities such as the new swimming pools and indoor arena that are proposed in the city.
