Knowle West Regeneration Framework
Background
Approximately 15,000 people currently live in Knowle West, which was mostly built between the 1920s and 1950s. For many Knowle West is a great place to live and there is a strong sense of community. However it has its share of problems, due to concentrations of deprivation and poverty, mixed with its physical distance from employment, services and facilities in the rest of the city. Filwood Broadway has declined and much of the built environment is in need of regeneration.
About The Knowle West Regeneration Framework
Bristol City Council and its partners the Homes and Communities Agency and the South West of England Regional Development Agency have appointed consultants, Urban Initiatives, to help develop the Knowle West Regeneration Framework and an Outline Planning Application for the Filwood Corridor. The regeneration framework will plan for the future of Knowle West and guide investment over the next 20 years. It will outline how the area can significantly improve from new development, boost the local economy and be revitalised.
Bristol City Council and Urban Initiatives will work with local residents, and others with an interest in the area, to help develop the Knowle West Regeneration Framework. Developments are likely to include:
- new housing supporting new shops and community facilities
new employment opportunities
- new education and skills facilities
- better public transport, and
- improved open green spaces and play spaces
Knowle West Regeneration Framework - Baseline Briefing
Urban Initiatives have produced a baseline data report for the preparation of the Knowle West Regeneration Framework (see links below to download this document). This is a research report that covers a number of key issues that have been identified for the Knowle West neighbourhood; including environmental controls, population increases, education and skills and employment opportunities. As this is a factual report it is not part of the consultation to develop the Knowle West Regeneration Framework.

Public consultation
It is really important that local people get to have a say on the development their area. A number of engagement activities are happening from September 2009 to produce the Knowle West Regeneration Framework. Residents, including young people, businesses, landowners and stakeholders will be invited to help produce the exciting plans for their area. Visit the Knowle West Regeneration Framework Community Involvement and Consultation Events page for details.
