Cardboard

Please note that this information is for kerbside collection and not for flats - please see our recycling in flats page.

Cardboard is collected at the same time as your food waste collection.  We will collect any type of cardboard, but please ensure polystyrene and plastic packaging is removed, and sticky tape and plastic labels are taken off where possible.

Please put small pieces of cardboard in larger boxes and flatten where possible, then place securely next to your food waste bin so that it doesn't blow away!

Unfortunately we cannot take waxed drinks cartons (Tetra-Paks) as these are made up of other materials mixed with cardboard which cannot be composted.  These can be recycled at your local Recycling Centre.

Please note: Do not put cardboard in your black box as it will not be collected.

Food waste

Please note that this information is for kerbside collection and not for flats - please see our recycling in flats page.

You will need:

  • Brown food waste bin – this is the bin you put out on your collection day every week. It is designed to be stored outside and should be kept locked.
  • Food waste caddy – this smaller bin is kept in your kitchen and is a convenient way of collecting your food scraps. When it’s full, empty it into your brown bin.

If you need a new or replacement food waste bin or food waste caddy, you can order new bins online.

What you can put in your brown bin:

  • fruit and vegetables
  • meat and fish
  • cooked and uncooked food
  • leftover food
  • bread, pasta, cereal and rice
  • tea bags and coffee grounds
  • dairy products and egg shells
  • bones
  • small cardboard items such as toilet rolls or egg boxes
  • small amounts of shredded paper

 Sorry we can’t take:
  • plastic (including bags made from degradable plastic)
  • corn starch liners without the compostable logo
  • metal and glass
  • any other household waste

Line It: Line your caddy with compostable liners (see the logo above) or newspaper before putting any food waste in it.  To find out where you can buy compostable liners locally, please have a look at our liner stockist list.

Scrape It: Scrape all your food leftovers into your food waste caddy. When it’s full, empty it into your larger food waste bin.

Lock It: Keep your food waste bin locked at all times to keep any insects out and the smells.  For extra freshness, particularly during hot weather, it’s a good idea to rinse out your food waste caddy and food waste bin with soapy water from time to time.
