Show of Strength
CELEBRATION
10 - 11 April
Show of Strength's first Show in 2010 is CELEBRATION: a coproduction with Bristol's wonderful Travelling Light at the CREATE Centre.
Over the weekend of 10-11 April they are putting on performances all over The CREATE Centre: lots of inspiring short plays for young people 8 years + and their families. They're really excited about how locations like the Ecohome might inspire the writers who will be working on this. They are working with a range of writers and are delighted to welcome back Mark Ravenhill who first worked with SOS back in their Hen & Chicken days.

There will also be an exhibition in the CREATE Gallery running until May 8th.
Peak Oil Exhibition
Peak oil describes the point at which the amount of oil produced globally in a single year reaches its absolute maximum. From this point onward the amount of oil produced will decline. Increasingly oil will come from more difficult sources, which along with scarcity will increase prices.
Cheap oil has made possible many of the huge changes in the last 30 years in the way we communicate, travel, eat, work and play. The next 30 years will bring yet more changes to our daily lifestyles.
This exhibition shows how many groups and projects in Bristol are already exploring ways of getting the best out of life in a less oil intensive world. Come and be inspired to join in.

‘Albatross’ - Gloria Ojulari Sule
Gloria lives in Bristol and works from a studio at Spike Island. We are delighted to host her work as part of our changing exhibition programme at CREATE.
‘I make work that focuses on issues of race, culture and identity drawing directly on my experience as a black female of dual heritage born in this country.
I also look to West African influences of contemporary Nigerian artists who in many cases use waste and recycled materials to create works that have strong links with culture and spiritual beliefs.’
‘My work ‘Albatross’ highlights the plight of the Albatross, particularly in the Pacific Ocean, as its colonies continue to be depleted by the build up of non-biodegradable plastic waste materials. Bottle tops are my main focus because they enter into our waterways and rivers in abundance and are effortlessly transported to the sea.
As an artist I am always aware of issues of pollution both locally and globally and I often use recycled objects and materials to make my work. In this project I draw inspiration from the Ghanaian artist El Anatsui whose practice utilises found materials and transforms them in huge artworks that harbour new meanings referencing cultural traditions.’
