Public Health Services - Food Safety - about our service

Introduction

The Council deals with all aspects of Food Safety and Public Health:

  • Food handling practices and procedures
  • Food hygiene
  • Food premises structure
  • Ensuring that suitable measures are adopted to protect the public health through licensing and approvals of potentially hazardous food handling activities
  • Investigating and taking appropriate action in respect of communicable disease where it is found to be associated with food premises
  • Health and Safety enforcement in food premises

It is the responsibility of Bristol City Council to make sure that food manufactured, sold and consumed in Bristol satisfies all legal requirements and is safe to eat.

We will take the appropriate action to prevent, or to remedy public health problems as they arise. In general terms this is achieved by means of enforcement, education advice and regulatory controls.

If you have any complaints or enquiries relating to any of these matters contact the Food Safety team (see below) who will investigate and take action accordingly.

Food Hygiene Star Awards

Do you ever wonder how hygienic your local restaurant is?

Would you like to know how Bristol's food inspectors rate it?

June will see the publication of this information for Bristol's food businesses together with a star rating based on their hygiene management.

For more information about this scheme and to see how it works elsewhere in the country visit the food hygiene star award website.
