Listed buildings at risk
Listed buildings "at risk" are those in danger of being lost due to:
- lack of use
- under-use
- disrepair, or
- dereliction.
Of the 4500 listed buildings in Bristol approximately 100 are currently identified as being at risk - well below the national average.
The city council produces a Register of Buildings at Risk, which is revised and updated every two years. The Register can be purchased from Customer Services, email them at customerservices.ptsd@bristol.gov.uk
In line with English Heritage categorisation, which take into account degree of disrepair together with occupancy the most extreme cases of dereliction are given the Risk Category 1. Those buildings that are in serious disrepair but still intact and weatherproof are assigned to Risk Category 2. Those buildings that are beginning to show signs of decay or disrepair are assigned to Risk Category 3.
Recent successes in removing buildings from the register include St Paul's Church, Portland Square (listed Grade I), and the stable block at Henbury Manor school.
