What is MEND?
MEND is an award winning FREE fun and friendly programme specially designed to help families get fitter, healthier and happier.
MEND stands for:
- Mind - understanding and changing unhealthy attitudes and behaviours around food.
- Exercise - adequate, safe - and above all fun - exercise.
- Nutrition - enjoyable, practical activities teaching healthy eating and food choices to improve the whole family's diet.
- Do it - get involved.

Who is it for?
MEND is an effective 10-week programme that uses techniques developed by health experts to help 7 to 13-year-old children who are above their ideal weight, to attend with their parents twice a week, learn about food and discover fun ways to get fit.
Is this programme right for my child and me?
If your child is aged 7 to 13 years
- If you and your child can attend two sessions a week for 10 weeks
- If you would like to learn more about eating healthily, being more active and meet other families... Then this programme could be for you.
How do I know if my child qualifies?
We will check whether your child qualifies based on their age, weight and health. You can also see where your child fits by following this link: your weight and BMI - you will need to input your child’s height, weight, age and gender. You can also speak to your GP or school nurse.
If your child fits within the obese category we would recommend that you see your GP or school nurse about being referred to the Bristol Obesity Clinic (COCO).
The COCO clinic at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is designed for children with more significant weight problems that may cause other problems such as diabetes or liver disease which occur more frequently as weight increases. If you are worried about your child's weight and these issues, your GP can refer you directly to the COCO clinic if you ask him/her.
How much does it cost?
The programme is FREE. Big Lottery funding and partnership working between Bristol City Council, Bristol Primary Care Trust and Sports and Leisure Management Charitable Trust enables us to provide places (at a cost of £400 a child) absolutely free.

What do you do on the MEND Programme?
Each session lasts two hours, there is a one hour physical activity session either in the sports hall or pool where children have lots of fun, playing games, relays, etc. Adults have their own discussion session during this time to share advice that works and look at the improving self-confidence and MIND side of the programme. The other hour is a healthy eating workshop for both adults and children. We also have a supermarket tour, a fabulous food fest and quiz.

The MEND programme is run and supervised by qualified MEND leaders who are CRB checked. MEND is both evidence-based and outcome-driven, and has been researched in the form of a Randomized Control Trial at the Institute of Child Health in London.
When is the next MEND Programme?
Posters and flyers for each programme can be obtained by calling 0117 922 3867 or email mend@bristol.gov.uk. MEND is a 10-week programme that runs each school term.
Central Bristol
When: Thursday, 6 May 2010 to Tuesday, 20 July 2010.
Where: Easton Leisure Centre, Thrissell Street, Easton, Bristol BS5 0SW
South Bristol
When: Thursday, 14 January to Tuesday, 30 March 2010. Sessions run Tuesdays and Thursdays 4pm-6pm (excluding half term week)
Where: The Park Sports Centre, Daventry Road, Knowle, Bristol BS4 1DQ
North Bristol
When: Starts Tuesday, 19 January to Thursday, 1 April 2010. Sessions run on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6pm-8pm (excluding half term week)
Where: Horfield Leisure Centre, Dorian Road, Horfield, Bristol BS7 0XW
Each session is two hours - one hour parent and child's healthy eating workshop and one hour child's activity session with 30-minute parent discussion.

How do I register for MEND?
Call the MEND team on 0117 922 3867 to see whether your child qualifies and to get more details on how to register.
When you call us you will be:
- Given information about the MEND Programme
- Asked information about your child to check they meet the criteria
- Asked to complete a phone registration form to obtain personal details.
This will take approximately five minutes to complete or if you would like a call-back about the programme please complete the form below and we will call you back between Monday and Friday 9am to 5pm.

How can I get involved in helping at MEND programmes?
If you are interested in volunteering as a programme assistant, can commit to a whole 10-week programme and have a background in fitness and/or nutrition we would be very pleased to hear from you. Please email your CV to mend@bristol.gov.uk.
