School Swimming
Introduction
Swimming is part of the National Curriculum
By the time children go to secondary school they should be able to swim 25m and undertake other swimming challenges.
Primary and junior schools in Bristol swim mainly in the pools and leisure centres managed by Sport and Leisure Management Limited (SLM) on behalf of Bristol City Council. The school swimming lessons are taught by highly qualified swimming teachers.
School swimming lessons are based on the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) National Plan for Teaching Swimming and aim to provide the highest quality lessons that give every child the opportunity to:
- learn to swim safely
- reach the National Curriculum standard
- develop swimming as a lifelong skill
- develop water skills so they can take part in other water-based activities such as sailing, diving and windsurfing etc.
