Cultural Strategy for Bristol

The Cultural Strategy for Bristol and Action Plan are now available.

Bristol is designated as a Centre of Cultural Excellence. We all know how special the city already is, but also how much we all need to do if our cultural life is to truly reflect the needs and wishes of all communities of Bristol.

The strategy was endorsed by Cabinet on 14th April 2003 and was formally adopted by Full Council on 10th February 2004.

The Cultural Strategy was prepared by a working group convened by the Council’s former Environment, Transport & Leisure Scrutiny Commission, including Councillors, and individuals from outside the council with expertise in a range of disciplines. Extensive consultation with partners, key stakeholders and Bristol residents took place during the early part of 2003. Copies of the strategy were displayed at libraries, sports centres and on the council’s web site. Over a thousand individuals and organisations were circulated with draft copies, aimed at those working in cultural provision (e.g. arts, sports, environment), in commercial and voluntary sectors, including tourism, and in neighbourhood renewal and equalities. The vast majority of responses were positive and several changes to the text were made in response to comments received.

The working group have subsequently produced an Action Plan, which was approved in September 2005 and its delivery will be monitored throughout the year.
