Sussex Place junction - proposed changes to traffic lights

Ashley Road, Sussex Place and Lower Ashley Road are all important routes in the City's road network. The junction is congested particularly during the morning and evening 'rush-hours'.

Standing traffic is a source of air pollution and this is something the City Council wants to improve. To try and overcome these problems we propose to update and modernise the traffic lights at the junction, which includes increasing the number of traffic lanes in Ashley Road and Lower Ashley Road, and changing the timing of the lights.

Currently, each of the three roads is given a separate green light, and pedestrians also have their own turn. This means that the traffic lights must change four times during each complete sequence, and this causes much of the congestion. In the proposed arrangement an additional lane on Ashley Road will have a filter left arrow running when Sussex Place runs, and the same on Lower Ashley Road when Ashley Road runs. This will help to significantly reduce the current congestion levels. The 'green man' pedestrian facilities will also operate more frequently.

Improving traffic movement through this junction will also help the proposed traffic lights at M32 Junction 3 to operate more safely and efficiently. Together the two schemes will help to improve the environment generally.

We propose to provide additional parking bays on Ashley Road, some of which could increase the number of short-stay parking spaces to help local shops (dependent upon the response).
