Involving the community in tackling 'grot spots'
Since Bristol Clean and Green started in 2002, it has been involved in a number of community clean-up projects. It has been shown that if a community works together to improve an area, this leads to longer lasting improvements to that area than if the Council worked alone.
Improving the appearance of an area can make it an altogether more pleasant place to live, so please contact us if you know of somewhere near to you which could do with a clean-up. Perhaps there is a bit of scrubland used for flytipping, or a graffitied wall which is causing an eyesore. We can supply funding, equipment and guidance to help you and your community make lasting changes in your area.

Read on to find out how the Clean and Green team have already helped Bristol residents tidy up their local 'grot spots'.
The Spring Clean Campaign
In January 2007 we launched the Spring Clean Campaign through the Bristol Evening Post. The campaign invited readers to nominate neglected sites in Bristol for restoration.
The four areas picked out were:
- Station Road subway in Ashley Down
- Filwood Road in Fishponds
- A back lane off Belmont Road, Brislington
- A wasteland close to Bearbridge Road, Withywood
Works are currently taking place to restore the winning entries to their former glory.
Happy Lane, St Andrews
A mural was designed and painted in Happy Lane (near Sefton Park Road) following full consultation with residents and the tennis club backing onto the lane. Tagging on the walls had increased to such an extent that the lane, commonly used as a walkthrough to St Andrews Park, was becoming unpleasant for parents and children alike. Since the painting of the mural, there has been minimal retagging of the walls and residents have been motivated to report any new tagging to the council for quick removal. One resident said:
“my children really enjoy walking down the lane now and always stop to look at the painted ladybirds”
Easton Clean Sweep
A day’s activities were carried out in several areas of Easton including Bannerman Road Park and the area around St Marks Road/Stapleton Road Station. Acting on advice from the Police, tall shrubs were cleared from the walkway up to the station making the approach safer and the pathway more visible. Pest Control came to talk to residents about minimising the chance of vermin on their property. The Fire Service and the Police were also in attendance.
Fairfield Bridge
This heavily tagged bridge was identified by residents in the area as being in need of restoration. A community group approached Clean and Green leading to the bridge being renovated with murals (see photo).
Sheene Way, Bedminster
This area had had a problem with fly-tipping for some time when its residents decided to get in touch with us. The Clean and Green team worked with residents to successfully coordinate the removal of over 100 tonnes of rubbish from the site. The area used for fly-tipping has now been completely fenced off and is, to date, free of fly-tipped rubbish. Bristol Clean and Green are also working closely with the Environment Agency in surveillance of the area.
New Stadium Road
This road runs underneath the M32, and was until recently a hot spot for fly-tipping. Bristol Clean and Green worked with the Environment Agency to clear rubbish and debris from the area, and erected a gate system to prevent further dumping.
Montpelier Station
Bristol Clean and Green worked with British Transport Police to clean off tagging on the area approaching the train station – helping to make the area feel safer for residents and passengers.
St Werburghs graffiti removal project
The Clean and Green team have recently been working with residents, community groups and businesses in St Werburghs to tackle the problem of tagging. Individuals who are currently on probation will also be helping to clean up the area under the Probation Service’s Community Payback Scheme. Residents were encouraged to report any tags to the local beat officer, and worked together to clean up the area in one go.
Noise Project, Hartcliffe and Withywood
Community groups, church groups and young people from Hartcliffe's Lamp Project got involved in cleaning up a total of 23 tonnes of waste from a site intended for use as a community garden. They cleared up overgrown gardens, removed rubbish from public areas, cleaned off graffiti and tidied up public green spaces. The work really helped to give young people an idea of how they could contribute to their community, boosting skills and confidence. At the same time the clean-up gave the community a solid example of the positive contribution that young people can make.
