News Update

New Cycling City website launched

Greater Bristol's Cycling City project has funded a new website - www.betterbybike.info - for the regions of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North Somerset. The site is packed full of information to get people on their bikes and cycling regularly - from maps and downloadable advice sheets to the latest news about cycling in and around Bristol. Plus there's a section devoted to the Cycling City work taking place as part of Bristol and South Gloucestershire's Cycling City project. The site is now the best place to go for the most up to date information about cycling city projects.

Solar Powered LED Lights Trial

As part of the Cycling City initiative a number of solar powered LED lights are being trialed on the recently opened Northern Link Phase 1 St Werburghs Path.  This type of lighting is particularly useful in ecologically sensitive areas where lamp columns are not suitable .

Possible sites for contra-flow and pinch-point works

Cycling City includes a project to tackle twenty pinch points, contra-flows or other barriers to cycling.  Possible scheme suggestions have been gathered from all available sources, including the 'Bristol Streets' website, the Cycle Forum, stakeholders and individuals. These have been included on a list and ranked in priority order and approximately the first 20 (depending on total budget) will proceed as part of Cycling City.

New schemes will be added to the list as they are suggested and then discussed as soon as possible at Forum to decide on their merit and given a ranking. The schemes have been given an initial ranking that will be open for discussion and alteration at Forum on 30 July 2009 and each subsequent Forum. Our intention is to update the  list  regularly to reflect the changes made at Forum and to act as a record of problems identified and progress made beyond the lifetime of Cycling City.  However, there will be limited scope for change among the top twenty after July Forum.

Please direct any comments or suggestions in relation to the schemes list to John Richfield john.richfield@bristol.gov.uk Te. 0117 903 6692.

Proposed infrastructure schemes in Bristol

As part of the Cycling City project we have 29 schemes in development to improve the infrastructure for cyclists for the Bristol City Council area. Each of these have a short summary in pdf format - the download links are below. The intention of theses summaries is to keep you informed as to what the proposals for each project are.  If you have questions or comments we will be addressing these through our Stakeholder panel, and also in a planned way at our regular bike forum meetings. This is (or is not) a complete list and as further detail is available this will be uploaded when it is ready.
