Green Flag award for Bristol

Release Date:  30-Jul-2007

One park, one nature reserve and two community spaces in Bristol have won national acclaim in the 2007 prestigious Green Flag and Green Pennants Awards.

These awards are presented annually and recognise the best green spaces in the country.

Bristol’s Downs and Troopers Hill nature reserve won Green Flag Awards, while Easter Gardens and Redcliffe Open Space both won Green Pennant Awards.

Parks and green spaces are judged on their individual merits and suitability to the community they serve. The winning of a Green Flag or Green Pennant is a nationally-recognised symbol of a high quality green space.

Councillor Rosalie Walker, Bristol’s executive member for health and leisure, said: "We are delighted to win two prestigious Green Flag awards - one for The Downs and one for the local nature reserve at Troopers Hill.

“Both The Downs and Troopers Hill are areas of outstanding natural beauty, attracting thousands of visitors every year - and best of all, they’re right in the heart of our city for local people to enjoy.

"The Green Flag awards recognise the best green spaces in the country. Thanks for Bristol’s success must go to our partners: Friends of Troopers Hill and the Downs Committee - who have worked hard with us to ensure these green open spaces achieve the highest environmental standards, thus creating a benchmark of excellence for others to follow.

"We would also like to congratulate everyone involved in the Easter Gardens and Redcliffe Open Spaces projects for winning Green Pennant Awards. These awards acknowledge the outstanding contribution community organisations have made to their local environment."

Susan Acton Campbell, chair of Friends of Troopers Hill, added: “We are delighted with this award. The Friends of Troopers Hill have worked hard over several years in partnership with Bristol Parks to preserve the wildlife habitat of the area, involve the community and encourage interest in the history and wildlife of this very special site. This Green Flag Award shows that our efforts have paid off.”
