Council elects Leader and Cabinet

Cllr Helen Holland: new Leader

Councillors have elected a new Leader and Cabinet to form a minority administration to run Bristol City Council.

Cllr Helen Holland isLeader of the Council for the civic year 2007/2008.

Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Care and Communities is Cllr Peter Hammond. His portfolio will cover adult community care, including policy relating to home care. The matter was a major issue of debate amongst councillors last night and at the adjourned session of the annual council meeting last week. Cllr Hammond's role will also cover Safer Bristol, equalities issues, community development and grants and support to the voluntary sector.

Cllr Judith Price is Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, which covers housing, waste and recycling services, environmental health and trading standards.

Cllr John Bees is Executive Member for Support Services, including contract services, financial and legal services, council tax and benefits.

Cllr Rosalie Walker is Executive Member for Health and Leisure. Her portfolio includes cultural and leisure services and health promotion matters including the city's alcohol harm reduction and smoke-free initiatives.

Cllr Mark Bradshaw is Executive Member for Access and Environment, including planning, transport and traffic, sustainable development and sub regional and citywide waste strategy.

Cllr Derek Pickup is Executive Member for Children and Young People, which covers schools and child welfare and protection.

The new Cabinet will be supported by two Executive Assistants. Cllr Chris Jackson will support Cllr Rosalie Walker on health and leisure issues (see note), while Cllr Jeff Lovell will assist Cllr Hammond on care and community issues.

All members of the new Cabinet are drawn from the Labour Group on the council. Their election was supported by Conservative councillors after a majority of members of the council had rejected the nomination of Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Steve Comer.

The new Cabinet is expected to meet at an early opportunity to consider a review of the council's strategy for the future management and delivery of home care services.

    Liberal Democrat 31,
    Labour 25,
    Conservative 13
    Green 1

Note: Cllr Sean Beynon was originally announced as Executive Assistant for Health and  Leisure. He has subsequently withdrawn from this role for personal reasons and is replaced by Cllr Jackson.
