Marksbury Road Library celebrates 75 years

Release Date:  24-Apr-2008

Residents in south Bristol are invited to join in celebrations marking the 75th birthday of Marksbury Rd Library on Monday, April 28.

The library will open its doors to show just what’s on offer in the 21st century – and how things have changed since 1933. The celebrations run from 2.30 pm to 6pm, with children’s activities such as face painting and a colouring competition from 3.15 pm to 6pm.

Councillor Rosalie Walker, Bristol’s executive member for health and leisure will welcome local children and visitors at a special cake-cutting event at 2.30pm. The birthday celebration will also mark the start of a consultation period when local people will be asked for their views on the library.

“Marksbury Rd Library is a well-loved library and valued community asset,” says Councillor Rosalie Walker. “I know the local users are passionate about it and it’s a real pleasure to be with them on this special day.

“Libraries help create better neighbourhoods and can offer a wealth of learning and leisure opportunities, which is why the council is investing in its library services. This year we will see the completion of our £1.3million refurbishment programme of six community libraries and we will be making further progress to develop new libraries at Whitchurch, Bishopston and in Easton.”

Other events to mark Marksbury Road’s birthday include:
· Local history event on Wednesday, April 30 at 2pm. A chance to share memories with the ‘Remember Be’minster’ group.
· Literary event on Tuesday, May 6 at 7pm with local author Jeanie Johnson who will talk about living and writing in Bristol.
