Catwalk toddlers show green benefits of real nappies
Release Date: 16-Apr-2008
Next Tuesday ten toddlers will take to the catwalk modelling the latest environmental fashion accessory for tots-about-town: the real nappy. Disposable nappies are a growing environmental problem. They can double the waste produced by households with babies, and their mix of plastics and chemicals means they will remain in landfill for an estimated 500 years before breaking down.
Real nappies are a real alternative that can cut the costs to parents and to the environment. By the time a baby is potty trained his or her parents could have spent up to £1,200 buying disposable nappies! Currently about eight million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in the UK.
Purchasing real nappies can cost less than a third of this, even with the added home washing. There are loan schemes for parents to try before they buy, laundering services which will collect and deliver so you don’t need to home wash - and as an incentive Bristol City Council and The Real Nappy Project are offering £30 vouchers off the initial cost of buying Real Nappies when parents spend over £50.
The cute fashion show will show the range of Real Nappies available, in various colours and a variety of fastening styles - no safety pins needed these days!Modern Real Nappies also differ from the ‘terry nappies’ of old because they don’t need soaking or boil washing. Flushable liners also help prevent leaking and nappy rash. The list of stockists is growing fast, including some supermarkets, and several will be attending the fashion show. Real Nappies will also be available to buy.
Councillor Judith Price, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, says: “We all understand that parents think disposable nappies are more convenient, but future generations will be paying an environmental price for that perceived convenience. This fashion show will, we hope, draw attention to the benefits of real nappies as a convenient alternative which costs families less, and costs the earth less.”
In addition to the Fashion Show there are two Real Nappy Road Shows being held during Real Nappy Week:
The Mall Galleries, Broadmead, Bristol BS1 3XE Friday 25th April 9am - 4pm
Mothercare Eastville Retail Park Eastville Bristol BS5 6XZ Saturday 26th April 11am - 3pm
