Big screen comes to Bristol
Release Date: 08-Aug-2008
The 7.6m x 3.6m screen has been installed on the side of @t-bristol's Explore building on Millennium Square and will stay there until at least the opening of the London Olympics in 2012.
Bristol is one of eight cities to benefit from the new big screens in time for the Beijing Olympics. The screen will be 'live' from 7am until 11pm - and on special occasions may stay on air until midnight.
The BBC, Bristol City Council and LOCOG will be content partners and together they will programme the screen to show BBC news; suitable sporting events covered by the BBC - such as Wimbledon - and local and community information, events and films.
The screen will provide opportunities for local groups and film-makers to highlight their work and promote community projects and events, including the UK School Games and Bristol’s Half Marathon.
City Council Leader Cllr Helen Holland, said: “I’m delighted our partnership with The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games has proved to be so successful. The giant screen is another example of how our ambitions plans for the city are paying dividends - and what a coup! By working effectively with our partners we are able to bring this exciting initiative to the city - not only for the 2008 Olympics - but for the 2012 London Olympics as well."
The screen will be the centrepiece of a free, family-friendly evente in Millennium Square on the afternoon of Sunday, August 24 to mark the Olympic torch handover from China to the UK.
