Exhibition designers appointed for new museum

The designers for the exhibition displays for the new Museum of Bristol have been appointed.

Event, one of Europe’s leading design groups with extensive experience of museum exhibition design, has been appointed by the Museum of Bristol team following a rigorous selection process.

“We are delighted to have Event on board as part of the team which will deliver Bristol’s fantastic new museum,” comments Rosalie Walker, Bristol’s executive member for health and leisure. “Their design approach is fresh, innovative and exciting, and reflects what we are trying to achieve with the new museum. 

“We have worked with Event on the master plan for the project; they know the project, have a clear vision for it, and bring great enthusiasm and commitment to it.”

London-based Event will be responsible for designing the main exhibition galleries in Bristol’s new museum.  The company has previously worked on a wide range of the most successful museums and visitor attractions in the UK and internationally, including Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, Glasgow; the John Murray Archive, Edinburgh; The Imperial War Museum North, Manchester; The Clore Interactive Gallery, Manchester; The Chester Beatty Library, Dublin; 'Magna’, the science adventure park in Rotherham; ‘Our Dynamic Earth’, Edinburgh; and ‘In Flanders’ Fields’, Belgium.

Esther Dugdale, Project Director at Event says: “Working with Bristol City Council to deliver this genuinely significant, ambitious and innovative city museum for Bristol is an exciting opportunity. 

“Event brings experience, creativity and ideas but the raw material we are working with is Bristol itself, its people and its heritage.  The aim of the project is to use the displays to both encapsulate the community’s voice and engage and create dialogue within the museum and beyond.  It is what museums should be all about and it will position the Museum of Bristol at the head of its field.” 

The new museum for Bristol will be based on the city’s harbourside in the landmark transit sheds, which formerly housed the Industrial Museum.  Work on renovating and restoring the sheds started in January.

The new museum is being funded by Bristol City Council; a grant of £11.2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund; the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council; and Renaissance South West.
