Free summer walks

Release Date:  08-May-2008

Local people are being encouraged to make the most of the long summer evenings by taking advantage of Bristol’s Museums, Galleries & Archives’ new summer walks programme.

A chance to discover a different side to well-known neighbourhoods, explore a hidden wildlife haven or be inspired by the city’s outdoor art scene, are just some of the highlights of the free programme, sponsored by the Friends of Bristol’s Museums, Galleries & Archives.

Starting on Wednesday 14 May at 6.45pm, people can join nature and archaeology experts Sally Oldfield and John Bryant on a free guided walk of Badock’s Wood Nature Reserve in Southmead, one of Bristol’s lesser-known pockets of wilderness.  As well as discovering what makes this site important as a wildlife refuge, the walk leaders will also give an insight into the local archaeology with evidence of a bronze age burial mound.
Other walks coming up in the programme include:

Down your street - Montpelier
Wednesday 11 June
6.15pm for 6.30pm.

David Cemlyn brings to life the fascinating past of places you might pass everyday without a second glance.

Art amongst the pigeons
Wednesday 9 July
6.15pm for 6.30pm.
A short walk around Bristol’s outdoor sculptures led by Douglas Merritt.

Broadmead & Cabot’s Circus
Wednesday 10 September
6.15pm for 6.30pm

Discover the hidden history of Broadmead and the new Cabot Circus development with Bob Jones.

The walks are free and open to all but places must be booked in advance, please contact Michael Powell on:  0117 922 3571 or e-mail michael.powell@bristol.gov.uk.

Details of the walks can be found on the council's website.
