Partners join forces to support Bristol Enterprise Week

Release Date:  11-Nov-2008

Bristol City Council, along with other agencies across the city, have joined forces to turn National Enterprise Week 2008 (November 17-23) into Bristol Enterprise Week 2008.

A dedicated website has been set up, and events are being planned to showcase the wide range of opportunities and support available for local people with enterprising ideas.

As part of a national week of activities celebrating enterprise at work, at home, in the community and in education, the Bristol Enterprise Week Partnership is organising an exciting programme of events designed to help people develop their ideas and unlock enterprising potential.

Anyone with an enterprising idea, whether they are keen to follow in the footsteps of Bristol entrepreneur Rob Law, designer of the Trunki suitcase as seen on Dragon’s Den, or want to use their idea within their workplace, community, school, college or university, should log on to www.bristolenterpriseweek.org.uk to explore the choice of advice, training courses, workshops and networks taking place during Bristol Enterprise Week.

From support for sole traders and small businesses to initiatives nurturing creativity in young people and from guidance for social enterprises to inspiration for company directors, members of the Bristol Enterprise Week Partnership offer all the expertise and know-how any would-be entrepreneur or enterprising individual could want to help bring their ideas to fruition.

John FitzGerald, spokesperson for the Bristol Enterprise Week Partnership, said: “Bristolians with bright ideas are incredibly fortunate as ours is genuinely a ‘city of enterprise’.

"There is a wealth of co-ordinated support and encouragement available from all kinds of agencies to help people get from a few scribbled notes on a beer mat to developing a properly researched business plan and from having a moment of inspiration to making it happen.

“During Bristol Enterprise Week we really want to get the message across that enterprise is for everybody. You don’t need any special qualifications to have enterprising skills or ideas. Enterprise can feature in every aspect of our day-to-day lives and take many different forms - it’s not all about big business. In Bristol we also have many enterprising communities, enterprising schools and enterprising employees for example.

“So anyone sitting on a gem of an idea should check out our website and come along to one of our many events for some tips and advice - you never know where it could lead.”

Councillor Mark Bradshaw, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development at Bristol City Council, said: "With Bristol city widely recognised as a major economic powerhouse, this is the ideal event for our city and we are pleased to be able to support and inspire young entrepreneurs through this week’s events.

As a sponsor of UK Business Incubation’s 10th Annual International Conference, which takes place during Bristol Enterprise Week, the city council is proud to be joining our partners in promoting a strong and buoyant city region. By being innovative and spotting the entrepreneurs and industries of the future we will be well-placed in this highly competitive world."
