Operation Safer Bristol launched
Release Date: 13-Oct-2008
A major joint operation to make Bristol a safer place to live and work is launched this week.
Operation Safer Bristol is an initiative of the Safer Bristol Partnership, an alliance of Bristol City Council, the police, the fire brigade, the NHS, probation and prison services and the voluntary sector. The Safer Bristol Partnership is running a wide range of activities to help people stay safe and to bring offenders to justice.
Brian McCutcheon, Chairman of Safer Bristol, said: “Operation Safer Bristol is really exciting as it covers such a wide range of joint schemes which we are implementing over the next few months to make Bristol a safer place to live. These will involve agencies working, often with the help of local people, to tackle crime, increase community confidence and help people to live safely.
“One major way we can make Bristol safer is to prevent crime and from 13 October teams of Community Safety Officers will be working with local residents, the police and other agencies to run an Operation Safer Bristol week packed with activities."
Community safety events planned include:
- walkabouts with local people looking at the routes used by kerb crawlers to identify target areas for police action
- providing advice and equipment to help people prevent theft and register and mark their property
- running vehicle crime reduction campaigns.
(See below for the full programme)
Other Operation Safer Bristol projects include working together to reduce dangerous behaviour around Halloween and the firework season, as well as a joint campaign to reduce hate crime, the launch of new drug information directories, and local clean-ups of areas to remove possible fire hazards and improve pride in the area. In December the partnership is focusing on helping people stay safe and healthy in the run up to Christmas and the New Year particularly when they are out at night.
