Going digital in South Bristol
Release Date: 02-Apr-2009
Deputy Minister for Digital Inclusion Wayne David MP joined senior figures from local government, business and services in Bristol to launch the new South Bristol Digital Neighbourhoods (SBDN) programme this week.
The event at Knowle West Media Centre also featured presentations from Cllr Barbara Janke, Leader of Bristol City Council; Martin Grisman, Services Director for Matthew Clark Holdings; George Ferguson, Chairman of Acanthus Ferguson Mann Architects; Michael Dunn, BT South West Regional Manager; Stephen Dodson, Director of DC10plus; John Fisher, Chief Executive of the UK digital inclusion charity Citizens Online; Neil Tilley of Alcatel-Lucent and Stephen Hilton from Connecting Bristol.
South Bristol Digital Neighbourhoods aims to create a state-of-the-art digital community, where a thriving digital economy is driven by a digitally skilled community as the regeneration of South Bristol is taken forward over the next few years.
Cllr Barbara Janke said:"This programme has the potential to give many people across South Bristol access to the internet for the first time and the opportunity to develop the skills they need to make the most of it - whether for work or training, improving their quality of life or getting involved in the local community and local democracy."
"When I was last Leader of the Council, I unveiled the first 'straw bale' to mark the start of construction of Knowle West Media Centre. It was great to be back there helping launch this programme, which the centre will play an important role in delivering."
