Cyclists get essential support

Release Date:  16-Jun-2009

Cyclists and walkers enjoyed a free, delicious organic breakfast to thank them for walking and cycling to work this week  - while new cyclists were given vital help and support to encourage to regularly commute on two wheels.

The annual Bike & Walk Breakfast on College Green on Wednesday 17 June was delivered through a close collaboration between Bristol Primary Care Trust, Bristol City Council, the Soil Association and the University of Bristol with the help of TASTE and Bristol's Cycling City programme.

As part of the event, there were these accompanied rides tinto the city centre to support people new to cycling:

  • Ride 1 - from North Filton (just south of the roundabout close to British Aerospace on Gloucester Road North).
  • Ride 2 - from Whitchurch village centre (outside the Maesknoll Public House)
  • Ride 3 - from East Kingswood (Kings Chase Shopping Centre)
  • Ride 4 - from Warmley (outside Station on Railway Path)
  • Ride 5 - from West Shirehampton (Shirehampton Green)

Current statistics show that there has been a significant increase in walking and cycling trips in Bristol in recent years and they now account for over 25% of  all commuter journeys.

Councillor Jon Rogers, Executive Member for Transport and Sustainability, said: "This is great news for Bristol in its fight to improve public health and to reduce road congestion. The message is simple. We need even more people to give walking and cycling a try. If this event has helped that process then it will have been a success."
