Young people help 'future-proof' Knowle West

Release Date:  27-May-2009

Young people help 'Future Proof' Knowle West

Young people from Knowle West and Filwood will be helping brighten up their neighbourhood at an action day this Thursday 28 May.

Future Proof is a group of youngsters aged 11 and over, who regularly meet in the area. The group, whose tag line is 'Believe in Knowle West', are committed to playing a positive and active part in improving their community and avoiding getting caught up in anti-social behaviour.

As part of a national young people's environmental programme, Community Space Challenge, the group will be painting graffiti art on 12 rubbish bins - several from local primary schools - to demonstrate their determination to serve their community in constructive ways.

Bristol City Council Youth Offending Service Manager Adrian Quinn said: "By helping young people play an active role in maintaining and improving their local environment, this project helps them to continue to develop a sense of citizenship and responsibility. This, in turn, can help reduce anti-social behaviour and crime. Well done to Future Proof for taking an active step in making their community a brighter place to be."

Other projects the group is invovled with include work to recondition bikes that local people can't afford to get fixed. The group return the bikes to their owners once they are roadworthy.
