Council gets go-ahead for new social housing scheme
Release Date: 09-Sep-2009
A major new council house-building programme in Bristol has been given the green light.
A total of 46 social housing units will be up and ready for the first tenants by March 2011 under proposals which have been approved by the Government.
The authority is one of 47 councils selected by the Government to share in the first round of bidding with £100 million being made available in total.
Councillor Mark Wright, Cabinet Member for Housing and Service Improvement, said: “I am very pleased to hear we have won this cash from the Homes and Communities Agency.
"Despite the property crash we are still very short of affordable housing in Bristol, and these new council houses will, I hope, be the first of many. Building them will also provide a kick-start to the local construction economy which really needs new construction to revive it."
He added that the council would be looking at the details of the scheme and at a range of procurement options to deliver the project in order to deliver the new housing as quickly as possible while still ensuring best value for money.
