Residents’ Parking Scheme - Your chance to have your say

Release Date:  19-Jan-2010

The final designs for residents’ parking schemes in Cliftonwood and Kingsdown go out to local people within the scheme boundary areas today (Tuesday 19 January 2010). Residents are being asked to complete a survey and confirm whether or not they are happy for the council to proceed through the final, formal traffic regulation order stage which will make it happen.

Residents of the Cliftonwood or Kingsdown areas will shortly receive a letter providing them with a unique username and password. They can use this information to complete a short online survey at www.bristol.gov.uk/rpsurvey .

The deadline for completing the survey is 5.00pm on Friday 5th February 2010.

Both schemes have been designed to minimise parking restrictions and maximise the amount of space available for parking, whilst protecting junctions and facilitating access for emergency vehicles.

The majority of parking is prioritised for local residents and other permit holders (eg visitors) only. However, we have also provided some flexibility by including some Pay & Display only parking areas and some parking areas that can be used either by permit holders or by people using the Pay & Display facilities.

Residents and other interested parties can read or download information about how the scheme will work and view the scheme designs for Cliftonwood and Kingsdown at www.bristol.gov.uk/respark .

These show the location of the proposed parking bays and waiting restrictions.

Alternatively, the scheme operating information and a set of plans for both pilot areas is held at the following libraries for reference purposes and can be accessed during normal opening hours:

- Bristol Central Library, College Green
- Clifton Library, Princess Victoria Street
- Redland Library, Whiteladies Road
- Cheltenham Road Library, Cheltenham Road

In 2008 the council wrote to over 53,000 households in areas around the city centre to gauge opinion on a "test case" Residents' Parking Scheme. As a result of this, the council decided to carry out further work to develop detailed proposals for pilot schemes in Cliftonwood and Kingsdown.

In November 2009, the council consulted on draft scheme designs for the Cliftonwood and Kingsdown pilot areas. The council has listened to the comments that were made on these draft proposals and have made a number of changes as a result.

Councillor Jon Rogers, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability, said: “We promised to engage local residents in the design of their scheme, and we have had a very positive response. From the outset a key aim has been to help local residents overcome a serious problem with parking in their neighbourhood. It has been a challenge to come up with a design which addresses a range of residents’ needs, but I am confident that most residents will see the final designs as genuine proof that we have listened, and are being as flexible as possible.”
