Stop Press - important advice on securing sheds

Following recent publicity on the issue of site security and sheds on allotment sites, we have reviewed our position with regard to the advice on securing sheds. We advise tenants not to keep items of high value such as machinery in allotment sheds. We recommend that sheds should be secured in line with advice given by Avon and Somerset Police, which you can view here. Please note, however, that this cannot guarantee 100% security on remote sites such as allotments. We have also added more information from the police to our pages here.

Stop Press - could you cultivate an allotment plot as a vineyard?

There is a unique opportunity to apply for an allotment plot which is a well established vineyard on the St Aidans allotment site in St George, -  If you're interested or would like more information, please contact the Bristol East Allotments Association on 0117 983 9351 or e-mail beaasec@sky.com

Alert - contaminated manure

Beware contaminated manure! A chemical herbicide called Aminopyralid which is found in a herbicide called Forefront and which is used by local farmers has been finding its way onto Bristol's allotments. It is important to ask the farmer or stables where you source manure that the pasture the horses were grazed on (or their hay was cut from) has not been treated with this herbicide. Find out more from the FCFCG website.

Alert -  Non-native Invasive Weeds

Non-native invasive weeds are a real problem. They are extremely difficult and costly to treat, control, or eradicate and the longer they are ignored the more difficult it gets. Find out more from the Avon Invasive Weeds Forum.

  • The original estimate for the money needed to upgrade all of Bristol's allotment sites was £1.5 million. Because of the specification of the fencing etc, being upgraded and changes in priority since the original estimate was produced in 1999, the present estimated amount needed has increased to over £3 million. So far we have already spent about £1.5 million on upgrading all allotment sites. Allotment Strategy, find out how Bristol's allotments are being developed.

You would have to be a resident in the locality or its neighbouring areas to be considered, but if successful you could soon be growing your own organic vegetables and flowers. You would not be charged for your strip of land, but would have to keep it together and under cultivation. Interested?  Then view the Knowle West Health Park website for more information about the project.
