Planning policy

development in central Bristol

Local plan

The Bristol Local Plan and associated documents contain policies used to determine planning applications in Bristol.

Local development framework

As a result of changes to the planning system, councils are gradually replacing their local plans with local development frameworks. Work is now underway on the Bristol Development Framework. The Core Strategy sets out the councils strategic approach to shaping the future of the city.

Regional and sub-regional planning

Plans for Bristol have to conform to plans for the South West region. Planning is also carried out at the sub-regional level to provide additional policy for Bristol and the 3 other local authorities that make up the West of England area (formerly Avon county).

Planning policy research

The council undertakes and commissions a wide range of research, which is used to compile an evidence base for preparation and review of policy documents.

Supplementary planning documents and guidance

A collection of documents provides supplementary information for developers making planning applications in Bristol.
