Pollution control - water
Waterway Quality
The Environment & Sustainability Unit routinely monitors the quality of waterways, including the Floating Harbour through our monitoring network. This information, in conjunction with health advice for all waterway users is available online. Advice on reporting water pollution is provided in conjunction with the Environment Agency.
We are currently running several local initiatives to protect & improve the waterways of Bristol.
Information on Bristol Floating Harbour Get on Board campaign, the Abandoned Trolley campaign and a new campaign aimed at tackling the Invasive Weeds along our waterways can be found on the website.
In addition, information on Operation Streamclean, a local initiative to improve the water quality in Bristol's rivers & streams through identifying & correcting illegal drainage misconnections is also available.
We work in partnership with river groups improving river corridor quality & raising awareness of Bristol's hidden urban waterways.
We have recently developed the South Bristol Riverscapes Project in partnership with Network South Bristol to increase the use of Bristol's waterways, increase learning opportunities along South Bristol's rivers, support existing groups in the area and work to establish two new groups along south Bristol rivers.
During the summer months, the project organises riverside walks along most of Bristol's rivers & streams.
Additionally, we also produces a bi-annual newsletter.
Sustainable Urban Drainage & Green Roofs
We are working with partners promoting the use of green roofs and sustainable urban drainage systems to reduce flood risk, improve biodiversity & reduce air pollution in Bristol.
