Volunteers play a vital and much-appreciated role in our service. From supporting public events to operating behind the scenes their enthusiasm, skills and commitment help us to deliver a dynamic and wide-ranging programme.
Summer is coming and we are recruiting again for a wide variety of new and existing volunteering roles within Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives. If you have some time to spare and are looking to pick up some new skills and experiences then please get in touch. Whether you are looking to support our events and exhibitions, or volunteer longer term, we have a variety of volunteering opportunities on offer. We are unable to offer volunteering placements to anyone under the age of 16.

Across our 7 sites, volunteers are involved with activties that take place behind the scenes or directly with the public. We have a vast range of roles including: cataloguing, restoration, supporting events, administration, marketing, technical support and so much more! All our registered volunteers receive email updates about current opportunities with the service. Not all roles are advertised on our website.
Volunteer Restoration Assistant
Do you have an interest in Bristol’s industrial history and in engineering? Would you like to be involved with exciting developments at M Shed?
We are looking for volunteers with experience of mechanical and electrical engineering to help restore and maintain the working exhibits at the museum.
You will be involved in:
- Overhauling and maintaining large steam and diesel engines
- Dismantling and reassembling heavy machinery
- Operating a wide range of workshop equipment
If you can spare a day or two per week (flexible hours), and would like to join our friendly team of committed volunteers, then get in touch.

All jobs can be found on our jobs pages. We only accept applications made using the official Bristol City Council application form and do not accept CVs.
Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives Service is currently unable to take work experience pupils, students or anyone else looking for a work placement.
