In 2006 Bristol City Council commissioned consultants DTZ to carry out a Citywide Retail Study. The study will inform the production of the Local Development Framework Core Strategy.
Phase 1
Phase 1 of the study, completed in June 2007, examines the current and future role of retailing in Bristol and forecasts what the future need will be, taking into account issues such as housing growth. The study includes an assessment of the current retail centre hierarchy and makes recommendations for changes to the hierarchy. The study also includes recommendations for addressing economic development and retail business support issues that will feed into the proposed Retail Strategy and Action Plan to be produced by the council’s Regeneration Division in collaboration with other partners.

Phase 2
Phase 2 of the study, completed in October 2007, presents forecasts of the potential new retail capacity across three sub-areas within the Bristol City Council area : North, South and Central Bristol. Forecasts are provided for three alternative scenarios for the spatial distribution of housing and population growth. These 3 "spatial options" are set out in the council's Core Strategy Issues and Options Paper (July 2007), a consultation document produced to inform production of the emerging Bristol Development Framework Core Strategy (consultation now closed).

Study of additional Local Centres
In 2007 the Council carried out a health assessment of some additional locations that might justify Local Centre status, supplementing the work carried out by DTZ for the main study.
