Council elects Lord Mayor and Leader of the Council
Release date:
Tue, 17/05/2011
Bristol City Council has elected its Lord Mayor and Leader of the Council at the annual meeting of the Full Council held this afternoon.
Cllr Geoff Gollop has succeeded Cllr Colin Smith as Lord Mayor for the year ahead, and Cllr Barbara Janke was elected Leader of the Council. Cllr Smith was elected to continue as Deputy Lord Mayor.
Cllr Gollop has selected two themes for the year ahead: the importance of neighbourhood and community groups, and the importance of business in the city.
The Lord Mayor’s year can be followed on twitter (@BrisLordMayor) and his Blog (BristolLordMayor.wordpress.com), also images through flickr.com/BristolLordMayor.
In the Leader’s statement Cllr Janke said that her administration would govern as a minority party, and urged all parties to work together.
Cllr Janke said: “We will continue to put Bristol first, keep taxes low and back a green and prosperous city. There are extreme challenges to face but we will continue to protect frontline services as much as we can.
“I am determined that all parties work together, putting the interests of the city first, and show the clear leadership that is needed at this time.”
Cllr Janke outlined a number of issues that were agreed by all parties. This included halting all disposals under the Green Spaces Strategy and setting up a cross-party working group to look again at the strategy.
All the parties also agreed that Ashton Vale Town Green application will be decided within one month and that a cross-party working would be set up to consider the transport interchange at Temple Meads, Rapid Transport schemes, possible tram system and rail options. Terms of reference would be agreed by members.
