What the council is doing
Bristol City Council is changing to meet the challenges of the 21st Century and to lead its citizens out of recession in a number of new and innovative ways. As part of the Recession Action Plan which was launched by the Leader of the Council, Barbara Janke, an undertaking was given to take on 100 apprentices within a year.
It has been widely reported that the 16-24 year olds have been the most adversely affected age group through the recession as employment opportunities for the age group are severly limited.
It was in response to this that Bristol City Council introduced the Bristol Apprenticeship Training Programme working in partnership with the City of Bristol College, Filton College and the National Apprenticeship Service.
In June 2009 we advertised for a number of apprentices and had a huge response from a high calibre of candidates. All applicants went through a skills assessment and then had an interview for the apprenticeship they were interested in.
Since then, over 180 apprenticeship opportunities have been created and many of our original apprentices have already gone on to higher graded permanent or longer-term contracts.
