What’s on the Big Screen?
Each week the BBC adds a selection of material to all the Big Screens across the UK. This is part of the 'national material' and includes films from other Big Screens and archive material.
Locally produced material is also added to the Big Screen on a monthly basis. If you have any material that you would like to have shown on the Big Screen please contact us to discuss your ideas and read about how you can get involved with the Big Screen.
We also have events and activities taking place at the Big Screen as well as major sporting and cultural programme shown on the Big Screen. View what's on at Big Screen events online These listings are updated on a regular basis, but please note that the schedule is subject to programming and may be changed without prior notice.
How to get involved with the Big Screen
The Big Screen aims to involve as many local residents as possible. The screen can show films, graphics, games and other digital content - you can also relay live to the screen as part of your event. There are many ways that you can get involved. We have produced a Big Screen guidance document (pdf, 31 KB) (opens new window) where you'll find some ideas to get you started.
History of the Big Screen
In 2008, Bristol was chosen as one of eight cities to host a Big Screen by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Bristol screen is part of the UK’s largest network of screens known as London 2012 live sites. It was the place to experience the excitement of the London 2012 Games featuring exclusive and localised coverage, competitions and live events.
There are 22 Big Screens across the UK. As part of the Cultural Olympiad the Big Screens represent a major legacy from London 2012 because they are planned to operate for many years after the Games.
The Big Screen is a great opportunity for the local community, public and the creative community of Bristol, to become a focus for live events as well as a place for films, animations, digital art, photographs and interactive games to get a proper public viewing.
Key partners
The £400,000 Big Screen project was funded by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
The Big Screens are run in partnership between LOCOG, the BBC and the various cities, in association with London 2012 partners BT and Lloyds TSB, supported by Cisco and the National Lottery.
At-Bristol who lease the land from Bristol City Council are responsible for the event space in front of the Big Screen known as Millennium Square. Working with local partners, the BBC and LOCOG we hold a range of events and activities within this area to compliment the Big Screen.
The BBC is responsible for the editorial and content that is being shown on the Big Screen. All material that is submitted goes through an editorial process reflecting the BBC Editorial Guidelines.
