Bristol in the running in Britain in Bloom and Entente Florale

The sun may not have shone much this summer, but the city’s floral displays, open and urban spaces are blooming.

This July these and other environmental aspects of our city will be under the spotlight as we welcome judges from the Britain in Bloom and Entente Florale competitions.

We’re trying to build on last year’s impressive results in the Britain in Bloom awards and make a successful debut in the European Entente Florale competition.

These competitions are not just about making the city look nice. The judges are also looking for real improvements which make a positive environmental impact.

They’re looking at things like street cleansing and waste management, and sustainable projects – from community-run allotments and horticultural planting to green roofs and initiatives to further support ecologically-sensitive habitats.

Our beds and borders are still important though. This year our city centre schemes have incorporated herbs and vegetables alongside flowers, and many schemes have taken on an Olympic dimension with blocks of single colour planting picking out the Olympic rings.

Britain in Bloom judges were in Bristol on Thursday 12 July and the Entente Florale jury members will visit the city on Tuesday 31 July.
