Mayor's amended budget proposals : February 13, 2013
Mayor George Ferguson has published his amended budget proposals following an open and thorough consultation. The amended Budget will now be put before Full Council for agreement on Tuesday February 26, 2013.
Draft budget proposals
The Mayor George Ferguson, published his draft budget proposals for the next financial year (2013-4). Due to cuts in government funding, the council must now make savings and cuts of £35 million - approximately 9% of the council's budget. This follows the £56 million savings the council has already found over the last two years.
Finding a further £35 million
There is no easy way to find a further £35 million worth of savings from the council's budget. The Mayor and senior council managers have thought long and hard about the best way to do this and present over 100 ideas for how this could be done in the next financial year. The proposals include a below-inflation increase in council tax of 2% recognising the current difficult economic conditions. The Mayor's proposals reflect his priorities of protecting services for the most vulnerable and addressing the city's most pressing needs as far as can be done.

The Mayor's initial budget proposals have now been published and so we invite you to:
- Read the budget briefing - Council finance is not an easy subject and we have tried to simplify the issue as much as we can. We would ask citizens read the budget briefing to give an informed view on the Mayor's proposals.
- Look at the Mayor's budget proposals - see the major budget proposals from our departments and read what they do.
The consultation closed on Monday, February 11, 2013. The results of the consultation will be published ahead of the council meeting which will attempt to set the budget for 2013-14 on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. The results will be considered by the Mayor, his cabinet and all councillors ahead of this meeting. Thank you for your views if you took part in the consultation.
