Introduction
The Council deals with all aspects of Food Safety and Public Health:
- Food handling practices and procedures
- Food hygiene
- Food premises structure
- Ensuring that suitable measures are adopted to protect the public health through licensing and approvals of potentially hazardous food handling activities
- Investigating and taking appropriate action in respect of communicable disease where it is found to be associated with food premises
- Health and Safety enforcement in food premises
It is the responsibility of Bristol City Council to make sure that food manufactured, sold and consumed in Bristol satisfies all legal requirements and is safe to eat.
We will take the appropriate action to prevent, or to remedy public health problems as they arise. In general terms this is achieved by means of enforcement, education advice and regulatory controls.
If you have any complaints or enquiries relating to any of these matters contact the Food Safety team who will investigate and take action accordingly.
Our aims
- To implement sampling programmes of relevant food
- To ensure that food businesses in the city comply with all relevant food and health and safety law
- To complete an annual programme of food hygiene inspections
- To provide advice and guidance to consumers and traders regarding food safety and composition
- To provide an initial response to all complaints within 2 working days
- To respond to groups and organisations seeking information and guidance on food issues, and provide talks where necessary
- To review regularly our policies and procedures to ensure the best possible service is provided to our customers
- To react quickly and appropriately to Food Alerts and to protect consumers from potential harm when emergencies arise
- To continue to create links with the diverse food business communities in Bristol to provide information and training
- To promote food safety
