Green flag award
The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. It encourages parks and green spaces to achieve high environmental standards, creating a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas.
Bristol has won eight Green Flag awards this year.
The Green Flag awards scheme recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces in England and Wales. Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status for each site.
Eight of Bristol's parks have won this prestigious award:
- Ashton Court Estate - 2009, 2010, 2011
- Blaise Castle Estate - 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011
- The Downs - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011
- Netham Park - 2010, 2011
- Queen Square - 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011
- St Andrew's Park - (new) - 2011
- St Paul's Park - 2009, 2010, 2011

Green Heritage Sites Award
In 2009, 2010 and 2011 Ashton Court Estate also received the Green Heritage Sites Award in recognition of the excellent upkeep of parks that are of historical and cultural interest.
A consortium consisting of Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and GreenSpace manages the Green Flag award scheme.
When a park flies the Green Flag it has met the following criteria:
1. A welcoming place
2. Healthy, safe and secure
3. Clean and well maintained
4. Sustainability
5. Conservation and heritage
6. Community involvement
7. Marketing
8. Management
To see a more detailed description of the criteria and how we meet them, visit the Green Flag Award website.
Management plans
In addition to the above criteria the park to be awarded a Green Flag must have a detailed and up to date management plan.
