Active Bristol is a partnership project between Bristol City Council, NHS Bristol, WESPORT, universities, non-profit agencies, private businesses and local community groups.
Active Bristol lead on Bristol's Physical Activity Charter as a part of their shared vision for the promotion of physical activity which is “Inclusive and accessible, free or low-cost, fun, non competitive activity, sociable, part of everyday life, sustainable and environmentally beneficial.”

WESPORT has put together a fantastic resource to help people of all ages and abilities find fun things to keep themselves active. There are hundreds of activities on offer from not only Bristol, but throughout the West of England.

Current projects
Active Bristol participates in a number of council and NHS led healthy initiatives to increase physical activity. These range from making the streets safer for play, promoting walking and cycling around the city, and creating social, fun activity opportunities for older people.

Active Bristol's Objectives
- To raise the profile of the benefits of physical activity i.e. health benefits and other benefits
- To provide coherent and focused local guidance on how to be physically active
- To improve the accessibility of physical activity by reducing social, economic and generational barriers
- To promote physical activity as an integral part of the sustainable future benefiting society, the environment and the economy
- To ensure that ‘active-friendly’ policies are implemented in urban and transport planning
- To initiate lasting changes towards an urban environment that inherently promotes everyday physical activity
Benefits of creating and maintaining and active city:
- Promotes health and wellbeing amongst people
- Helps reduce the high economic costs of inactivity for health and social services
- Enhances social cohesion
- Attracts tourism and visitors as well as long-term residents
- Promotes walking and cycling over car use, reducing the problems related to noise, air pollution and road traffic injuries
- Benefits employers, since having a healthy workforce reduces sickness leave and increases productivity
