Nature and Wildlife
There is a wildlife area in the park, incorporating a hedgerow with native plants (including hawthorn, willow, dog rose and hazel) surrounding a wetland. The hedge shelters the site from the winds, making it more attractive to both people and insects, which would otherwise be blown about in the wind.
Look out for butterflies laying their eggs on the planted nettles, and the small, bristly Red Admiral and small Tortoiseshell caterpillars after they have hatched. In winter, finches can be seen eating the seed heads of the thistles and willowherb: an invaluable source of protein in cold weather.
Watch out for the birds using the park's mature trees and buildings for shelter and nesting, and for the insects taking advantage of the park's wealth of plants for nectar. You may even be lucky enough to spot bats in the evening, taking advantage of the rich insect life in the trees.
Community engagement
The Victoria Park Action Group (VPAG) is a committed and active local user group with many interests. It was started in 2002 by people living near the park who wanted to preserve and improve its facilities. The group can be contacted via The Victoria Park Action Group website or by emailing membership@vpag.org.uk.
