Love your local market....even more
Release date: Thu, 21/06/2012
As part of a national campaign to encourage local markets and give a boost to new, independent businesses, Bristol City Council’s St Nicholas Market will be taking part in ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight by setting up nearly 20 new stalls on Corn Street on Thursday June 28 and Thursday July 5.
The ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight (from June 23 to July 8) initiative is part of a wider campaign, spearheaded by national champion, Mary Portas to bring back a buzz to local shopping areas and city centre high streets.
The cost of having a market stall is just £10 per day of trading. Jewellery, fruit and veg, children’s clothing, toys, artisan ice creams, original art works, books and printed T-shirts and hoodies are among the wide variety of goods and produce on sale at the new market stalls participating in Bristol’s ‘Love Your Local Market’ event.
“St Nicholas Market has a well-earned reputation for supporting start-up businesses and helping small independent businesses get established,” says Councillor Guy Poultney, Bristol’s executive member for festivals and communities. “By taking parting in the ‘Love Your Local Market’ campaign, the council is helping to break down the barriers that prevent many people from taking that first step towards starting up a new business.
“By providing affordable pitches, the stalls, umbrellas and public insurance liability we are giving would-be entrepreneurs the chance to see if their idea for a new business can work. I hope local people will back this initiative and come along to show their support.”
The national ‘Love Your Local Market’ initiative coincides with the return of Bristol’s popular Quakers Friars Saturday Food Market, which starts on Saturday, June 23. Bristol’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Peter Main will officially open the market at 11.30am. The Saturday Food Market will operate from 11am to 6pm throughout the summer.
