Commissioning services for vulnerable parents with young children

Commissioning services for vulnerable parents with young children

The recommissioning process for parent and child assessment placements, and homelessness prevention services for vulnerable parents.

Parent and child assessment placements

These are short-term placements, usually of about 12 weeks, to assess parents’ ability of to safely parent their child. Placements are either in a residential children’s centre or in a foster carer’s home.

We currently buy individual placements from external providers.

Homelessness prevention services for vulnerable parents

We currently have an integrated service for young parents who are at risk of homelessness. The service includes floating support and short-term supported accommodation.

The cost of these services

Last year we spent

  • £860,000 on parent and child assessment placements
  • £404,000 on the homelessness prevention service for young parents

Proposals

We've carried out a needs assessment and developed a draft commissioning plan setting out proposals for securing these services in the future.

Consultation: how to give us your views

We would like to hear your views on our draft proposals.

We would particularly like to hear from people:

  • who provide the services we are recommissioning
  • who’ve had experience of the services
  • who work with vulnerable parents and families
  • involved in child protection legal work

We'd also like to hear back from commissioners from other local authorities.

The consultation is open from 11 October 2017 to 6 December 2017.
